About the Artwork

Hyenas are often misunderstood animals. In many stories and cultures, they are portrayed as scavengers, troublemakers, or symbols of something negative. Yet when I observe them, I see intelligent, highly social creatures that play an important role in nature.

The inspiration for Judging came from the way this hyena seemed to look directly back at me. Its expression felt almost human, as if it was silently questioning the assumptions people make about it. In that moment, I began to wonder who was really being judged. The animal, or the people who had already decided what it represented.

Through this painting, I wanted to explore the idea of perception and how quickly we form opinions based on appearance, reputation, or first impressions. The intense gaze invites the viewer into a moment of reflection, challenging us to look beyond labels and see the individual behind them.

Judging is a reminder that understanding often begins when we pause long enough to truly see what is in front of us.
